RAID 1 means one drive is a duplicate of the other, should one fail there is another there to keep the system running with all of the data backed up. A USB 2.0 connection is also included for connecting an additional drive to the unit for adding more storage space. WD Anywhere Access software is preloaded which works with an online server, offering a free account. To access and manage your drive you just go to your account with your browser and all drive contents and file management options are there. It can be set to automatically backup files from any computer with Anywhere Access software, typically those on the local network, and there is also an option of emailing non-users a link giving them VPN-like access to the files and folders of your choice as well. The unit is also DLNA cerified so you can stream video and audio to either a tv or audio system from it, using the drive as a central home-media storage device for all of your computers. iTunes server is also included.
