The Synology DS109j is an entry level single bay SATA NAS server aimed at home and personal use. The maximum capacity supported is 2TB and the unit accepts standard 2.5" replacement drives both HDD and SSD.

Located on the back are two USB 2.0 ports, LAN connection, security lock slot and openings for the internal fan. On the front is another USB 2.0 port, Status/LAN/Disk LED's, a power button and a USB Copy button which allows you to quickly copy files from a USB device to the hard disk. Many features have been included with the DS109j that enable it to be used for a range of applications including a Web Server, streaming to DNLA compatible devices such as a flat screen TV, and the included Synology Download Station 2 program works as a 24/7 download center for BitTorrent, FTP, HTTP, eMule, and NZB .
The DS109j can also be used as an automatic backup system for all your home or office computers when used with the also included Synology Disk Station Manager 2.2 software. This is a web based application that is accessed from the web browser that can be configured to automatically backup your network computers. Many types of audio and video formats are supported which makes this a good home-media hub and a host of applications like Photo Station 3 and iTunes Server are included. Those looking for more space and RAID support in otherwise the same drive might be interested in checking out the DS209j.
