After drives have been installed, the device can be connected to a local network via either a Gigabit LAN interface or 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, after which it can be used to share documents and digital media.

More specifically, the DSM-G600 can be used as an FTP server to provide remote access; as a UPnP AV server to stream digital content to a compatible media player; and as a supplementary access point for an existing wireless network. Included also is backup software for scheduling nightly or weekly backups.
